I saw my first Dolphin Eclipse this morning during an early AM surf session at Venice. There was a pod of dolphins playing and breaching in the lineup as I paddled out south of the Venice pier. After a big set rolled through I settled in a little further out past the takeoff zone and waited for the next set. As I turned and looked south/ south east down the line I saw a Dolphin explode out of a wave into the air. Its body was silhouetted against the golden sky and the spray of water dispersed by the animal's sheer power was backlit by the morning light. The airborne Dolphin passed through the low hanging early morning sun creating for just a moment, a Dolphin Eclipse. Except for a couple other surfers in the distance, I was alone. I tried to express what I just saw but yelling and wild hand gestures could not explain the heavy dose of perspective I witnessed this morning.
